UNITED NATIONS, January 20 (Sputnik) – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday called for a cessation of hostilities in Yemen.

Ban Ki-moon "is gravely concerned about the deteriorating situation in Yemen. He deplores the heavy fighting between Ansarallah armed groups and Yemeni presidential guards throughout Sana'a," the UN press office said in a statement.

As a result of violent clashes between Houthi rebels and members of the country's presidential guard 9 people have been killed with more than 60 injured on Monday.

Even though Houthi rebels and presidential guard members managed to reach a ceasefire agreement on Monday, clashes never ceased entirely.

On Tuesday, a military source told Sputnik that Houthi rebels managed to capture the presidential palace in the Yemeni capital Sanaa.

The Secretary-General "calls on all sides to immediately cease all hostilities, exercise maximum restraint, and take the necessary steps to restore full authority to the legitimate government institutions," the statement read.

The UN chief also called for the release of the president's chief of staff Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak who was kidnapped last Saturday. Houthi rebels are suspected of being behind the abduction.

"All sides must abide by their stated commitments to resolve differences through peaceful means to ensure the full implementation of the Peace and National Partnership Agreement," the statement added.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on the situation in Yemen earlier on Tuesday.
