"I demanded from [US Secretary of State] John Kerry to change [US] position and act within the framework of international law in the Middle East crisis' mediation," Oreikat said speaking at the Rossiya Segodnya press center, commenting on the results of the recent meeting with Kerry in London.
"Peace is possible only through the creation of an independent Palestinian state," the Palestinian official emphasized, calling on the international community to recognize the co-existence of two independent states – Israel and Palestine.
Sahib Oreikat has been involved in a number of talks with mediators of the peace process in the Middle East. In addition to US-Palestinian negotiations, he has also met UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, and visited Jordan and Egypt.
On Monday, Sahib Oreikat met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow. Lavrov reassured Oreikat that Palestinians" aspirations for international recognition and sovereign statehood were supported by Russia.
The latest efforts to settle the decades-long crisis in Israeli-Palestinian relations started in July 2013.
Back then, US Secretary of State John Kerry laid out an ambitious nine-month plan to broker a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, which failed and was followed by an Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip in the summer 2014. Over 2,000 Palestinians were killed in the operation and the infrastructure of Gaza was severely damaged.
