UN Security Council Condemns Attack on French School in Afghanistan

The UN Security Council has condemned the recent suicide attack on the French Institute of Afghanistan and called up to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors to justice.

UNITED NATIONS, December 12 (Sputnik) – Members of the UN Security Council have condemned a recent suicide attack on the French Institute of Afghanistan in Kabul, which has led to the deaths of numerous civilians.

Calling for accountability in a Thursday statement, the UN Security Council "underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice, and urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Afghan authorities in this regard".

Members of the Security Council also reiterated their concerns over the threat posed by the Taliban, which has claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, as well as al-Qaeda and other extremist groups, stressing that "no terrorist act can reverse the path towards Afghan-led peace, democracy and stability in Afghanistan, which is supported by the people and the Government of Afghanistan and by the international community".

The attack on the French school in Afghanistan's capital Kabul happened on Thursday, when a suicide bomber blew himself up during a play performance.

Afghanistan has long been fighting the Taliban movement, as well as other insurgent groups acting in the country. Attacks targeting military, diplomatic and foreign sites in Kabul and the suburbs have intensified as US-led NATO forces are preparing to leave Afghanistan.
