MOSCOW, December 5 (Sputnik) — The Syrian city of Kobani, also known as Ayn al-Arab, will soon be totally liberated from Islamic State (IS) militants, Kurdistan Democratic Party representative in Russia stated Friday.

"According to our data, Kobani will be soon freed [from IS militants]," Hoshavi Babakr said in Moscow at a news conference at Rossiya Segodnya press center.

The representative also added that currently "more than 50 percent [of Kobani] is already freed [from the Islamic State], some say – 60-70 percent."

The IS has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq, declaring a caliphate on the territories that had fallen under its control. - Sputnik International

The fight against IS jihadists is complicated by the fact, that at nights, IS troops are replaced by fresh forces from the surrounding areas, mostly Sunni-populated.

Kobani is "a symbol of victory for Islamic State, for us [Kurds] it is also a symbol of victory. That’s why we are fighting very fiercely, until the very end," Babakr added.

Since September 2014, Islamic State militants, that seized vast areas in Syria and Iraq and announced the establishment of an Islamic caliphate on the territories under its control, have besieged Kobani, one of the largest towns in the Kurdish region bordering Turkey.

Kurdish self-defense forces have been defending the town with the help of the US-led international coalition, that is currently conducting airstrikes against IS targets in Syria and Iraq.
