As a member of the anti-IS coalition, Germany has announced its intention to help Iraq defeat the militants.

MOSCOW, December 3 (Sputnik) - Germany will support the government of Iraq in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) militant group, the German Foreign Ministry said on Twitter Wednesday.

"[Foreign Minister Frank-Walter] Steinmeier assures PM [Haider] al-Abadi of GER support in fight ag. ISIS [the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria]. Al-Abadi thanks for GER aid," the ministry's Twitter post read.

Germany is a party to the US-led international coalition against IS and other terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria. Reports earlier this year said the country had provided Kurdish fighters with enough weapons and equipment to arm 4,000 soldiers.

In November, the head of Germany’s domestic security agency Hans-Georg Maassen said that at least 60 German citizens had died while fighting for IS, adding that approximately 550 German nationals had recently left for Iraq and Syria to fight for IS.

German Citizens Behind Islamic State Suicide Bombings in Syria, Iraq
IS militants have been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. Two years later, they launched an offensive on neighboring Iraq and proclaimed a caliphate in June over the vast areas they had seized across Syria and Iraq.

To avert the military advances of the jihadists the United States and a group of its allies set up an airstrike coalition that later saw contributions being made by several dozen nations.
