UNITED NATIONS, November 13 (Sputnik) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has condemned the bombings of the embassies of Egypt and the United Arab Emirates in Tripoli.

"UNSMIL condemns the bombings this morning in Tripoli of the embassies of Egypt and the United Arab Emirates," UNSMIL said on Thursday in a press release.

Back on November 9, another car bomb went off in the city of Shahat in eastern Libya where UN envoy Bernardino Leon was meeting Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni.

Regarding the attack on embassies, the UN Security Council cited international conventions that require protection of diplomats and "the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises, and the obligations on host Governments … to take all appropriate steps to protect diplomatic and consular premises against any intrusion or damage."

Calling for accountability, the members of the Security Council emphasized the need to bring those responsible for the attacks to justice.

Libya has been in a political turmoil since 2011 following the overthrow of country's long-standing leader Muammar Gaddafi. The clashes between a large number of armed groups are ongoing in the country, taking over the whole districts.

In late July, a number of countries, including China, Greece, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Poland and Egypt, started evacuating their nationals from Libya over the security threat.
