While the Queen attended the Remembrance Sunday ceremony in London, Prince Harry commemorated the soldiers who had died in Afghan wars in the Kandahar military base.

MOSCOW, November 9 (RIA Novosti) — Prince Harry participated in the Remembrance Sunday ceremony in Afghanistan to commemorate the soldiers who had died in Afghan wars, following the tradition of laying a wreath by a member of the British Royal Family in each year’s memorial, the UK’s Defense Ministry said in a report.

“While the Queen attended a ceremony in central London, Prince Harry joined his comrades in arms in the Kandahar military base,” the ministry said. “As a representative of Her Majesty, he laid a wreath on the memorial located at the base, and took part in the memorial service.”

The United Kingdom officially ended its military operations in Afghanistan in end of October, with the last troops set to leave Afghanistan by the end of the year.

Prince Harry served in Afghanistan twice, in 2008 and in 2012 to 2013, making him the first member of the Royal Family to partake in active combat since his uncle Duke of York fought in the Falklands War, according to the BBC.

The Remembrance Sunday is celebrated throughout the United Kingdom and wreaths are made from poppies. It is celebrated on the Sunday closest to November 11, marking the end of World War I.
