A powerful 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit Peru at 07:11:10 UTC Sunday, some 26.5 kilometres north of Atiquipa in the southwestern mountaneous department of Arequipa. The United States Geological Survey registered the tremor at a depth of 34 kilometres.
There are no immediate reports about whether the seismic event caused any casualties or damage.
Last week, Peru was hit by a 5.5-magnitude quake that crippled buildings in the Arequipa department.
In May 2019, two people were killed and over 30 people injured after a devastating 8.0-magnitude earthquake rocked parts of Peru and neighbouring Ecuador.
