Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) Secretary General David Choquehuanca slammed US President Donald Trump over remarks that the United States could use a military option to resolve the crisis.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Friday, Trump said that the United States had numerous options for influencing the situation in protests-torn Venezuela, including a military option.

"This statement of the US president is unacceptable," Choquehuanca said, according to TeleSUR TV channel.

According to the local media, the ALBA head also called on the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to convene an emergency meeting to examine the threat the United States poses to Venezuela.

The statement comes amid US Vice President Mike Pence's Latin American trip which started on August 13.

Venezuela has been in the grip of sweeping anti-government street protests since spring. So far, over 100 people have been killed, more than 1,400 people injured, and hundreds arrested. The turmoil intensified after the largely criticized election of delegates to the Venezuelan Constituent Assembly, which has the power to rewrite the country's constitution.

ALBA was established in 2004 on the initiative of then Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuban leader Fidel Castro. The organization comprises 11 full-fledged member states, including Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Venezuela, as well as three observer members and Suriname as a "special guest member."
