Peruvian Ambassador to Russia said Monday that Lima is looking forward to increasing the number of Russian citizens travelin to the Latin American country.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A flow of tourists from Russia, who visit Peru in order to explore the cultural heritage and traditions of the country, will hopefully increase over the upcoming years, Peruvian Ambassador to Russia Luis Benjamin Chimoy Arteaga said Monday.

"There is an enormous amount of people in the Russian community, which, when traveling, seek cultural enlightenment. We want to increase the flow of these tourists in the future … We hope that the rapprochement between the nations of Peru and Russia will foster our relations," the ambassador said at the meeting with Andrey Klishas, the chairman of Committee on Constitutional Legislation of the Russian upper house of parliament.

Even though the Dominican Republic remains the most popular destination among the Russian tourists in the Latin America, Peru makes efforts in order to increase awareness of the Peruvian culture in Russia, the country’s ambassador underlined.

Moscow and Lima seek to cooperate on the development of road transport infrastructure, housing and communal services. The countries also work on the enhancement of health and education system, promotion of cultural exchange and tourism. In 2016, Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said he wanted to develop relations with Russia in a number of spheres, including military. Since then, the Peruvian helicopter maintenance company Conaic has signed a contract with the Russian Helicopters company on the purchase of a range of spare parts for the Mi-17 helicopters operating in the country, Conaic CEO Javier Espino Ruiz de Castilla told Sputnik in July.
