An explosion occurred in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas on Sunday, during an anti-government protest amid an election to the Constituent Assembly, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A video posted by a journalist of Te Lo Cuento News media outlet on Twitter showed that the explosion occurred on a wide street in the Altamira neighborhood of Caracas, with three motorbikes burnt down.

The election to the Constituent Assembly is taking place in Venezuela on Sunday. The body will have the right to amend the constitution. The opposition’s so-called popular referendum on July 16 voted against the decision to hold such election.

The election comes amid protests that erupted across Venezuela in early April and have since claimed the lives of over 110 people. They followed an unsuccessful attempt of the Venezuelan Supreme Court to absorb the legislative power of the National Assembly, which currently under control of the opposition.
