Colombia, Venezuela Open 5 Pedestrian Border Crossings
MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Truck traffic will be open for four hours a day, Monday through Friday from 20:00 until 00:00, at the Simon Bolivar bridge linking the cities of San Antonio del Tachira (Venezuela) and Cucuta (Colombia), as agreed by the country’s governments, El Impulso newspaper said on Friday.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro agreed to the gradual and controlled reopening of the common border in August.

The Venezuelan-Colombian border, stretching for over 1,300 miles, had been closed by the order of Maduro since August 2015 amid crackdowns on migrants and smugglers.

Venezuela has been in a state of an economic emergency since January with product shortages having become widespread in the country. Venezuela’s opposition has blamed Maduro for the economic crisis.

The Friday resumption of truck passage across the border could provide some product relief to Venezuelans.
