Venezuelan Opposition Calls on Public to Hold 10-Minute Anti-Maduro Protest

Venezuela’s opposition called on public in Caracas to join a 10-minute protest aimed to provide for signatures for a referendum to recall Maduro.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — Venezuela’s opposition called on public in Caracas to join a 10-minute protest aimed to provide for signatures for a referendum to recall President Nicolas Maduro, executive secretary of the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) coalition, Jesus Torrealba said.

"On September 7, there will be 10 minutes of protest… for the people of Caracas to stand wherever they are, demanding 20% of the signatures to revoke Maduro. Caracas will mobilize support from the rest of the Venezuelans," Torrealba said during a press conference.

The opposition has been trying to oust the Venezuelan leader for months amid widespread public discontent with Maduro's government and acute economic problems the country is facing.

The opposition has been collecting signatures in support of a referendum on removing Maduro from office. The first stage of signature gathering has already been completed and the opposition has moved on to the second stage, which requires about 20 percent of voters to give their support to the referendum. If completed, the second stage is followed by the launching of the referendum.

Last week, the opposition held a peaceful march demanding that Maduro step down.
