MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — The latest effort to end the conflict in Colombia began with negotiations between the two parties in November 2012. The Colombian government and the FARC group signed a ceasefire deal at an official ceremony held in Havana on June 23, pledging to complete the process of laying down arms within 180 days, but had been negotiating a number of technical details.
According to newspaper El Heraldo, the negotiations over the peace accord were finalized on Tuesday evening, and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos is expected to make the formal announcement around 19:00 local time (23:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
The news outlet added that the finalization of the peace accord allows Santos to send the text of the agreement to the Congress, which will schedule a referendum on the deal.
FARC is one of the world’s oldest Marxist insurgencies, formed in 1964 when it launched a war to overthrow the government of Colombia and install a revolutionary regime.
