The dislodged local residents are nearing the end of a long battle; they began their strikes and protests before the 20th FIFA World Cup that was held in 2014.

According to the protest's organizers, 650 families lived in the favela, which had been named after an old raceway located nearby, Vila Autódromo. They were all evicted to make way for the Olympics, and their rundown buildings were demolished to provide space for the new Olympic Park.
