Brazilian prosecutors filed charges against former Planning Minister Paulo Bernardo on suspicion of involvement in corruption and money laundering, local media reported on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Bernardo who was in the ministerial office under suspended President Dilma Rousseff and ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva allegedly set up a criminal group with 19 other officials in the Planning Ministry and received kickbacks in a fraud scheme, Agencia Brasil said.

In 2014, corruption schemes in Brazil's state oil and gas company Petrobras were revealed, triggering a wave of discontent in Brazil toward Roussef who headed the company in 2003-2010.

The upper house of the Brazilian parliament voted earlier in May to suspend Rousseff from office for 180 days, pending her trial, after she was accused of concealing the country’s budget deficit ahead of the 2014 re-election.
