The protesters marched peacefully in the federal capital Brasilia, as well in some other major cities in the country, many of them dressed in the national colors of green and yellow, waving Brazil's flags and carrying placards with slogans "Dilma — out," "Thieves — out," "Impeachment Now!"
The estimates of the number of people engaged in protests varied, with some local authorities expecting up to a million people to stand for Rouseff's impeachment.
The protesters also were critical of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who was reportedly involved in a major corruption scandal along with Rouseff, the allegations he repeatedly denied.
In parallel, there were also supporters of Rousseff and Lula holding their separate demonstrations, but their number was several times smaller than of those demanding Rouseff's impeachment.
Rousseff, 68, has been facing a wave of public discontent over economic chaos in the country and the corruption scandal in the state-owned company Petrobras. She headed Petrobras for seven years, between 2003 and 2010, during which most of the corruption was reportedly observed.
A year ago, the first wave of protests against the government of Rousseff brought together over 500,000 people, which became the largest political demonstration registered in Brazil since the 1984 protests. The protest arose during the year 2015, with hundreds of thousands of Brazilians insisting on Rousseff's impeachment.
