Head of the Roman Catholic Church Pope Francis has arrived in Mexico for a five-day visit after holding a meeting with head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, in Cuba.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Pope Francis was greeted by Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto at the Benito Juzrez International Airport in Mexico City. The two will hold an official meeting on Saturday.

Pope Francis plans to visit poverty-stricken areas, as well as communities affected by violence, in Mexico, which is the most Catholic country in the Spanish-speaking world, over the course of five days. His visit will end on Wednesday.

On Friday, Pope Francis held a historic meeting with Russian Patriarch Kirill at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport. The meeting marks the first time a Catholic pope and an Orthodox patriarch met since Christianity split into western and eastern branches in 1054.
