A civil prosecution has been launched against El Salvador’s former president Mauricio Funes for possible illegal enrichment.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The country’s Supreme Court ordered to open the civil prosecution on Wednesday, also ruling to freeze Funes’ bank accounts and the titles to eight vehicles.

Funes said on Twitter that "among the judges who voted for civil judgment against me are four who attacked my government while on the Constitutional Court."

Nine of the 15 Supreme Court judges voted for the Wednesday ruling after examining a report alleging that Funes was unable to justify more than $728,000 in expenditures.

Funes served as president of El Salvador from 2009 to 2014.
