At least 8 inmates were killed and 24 others were injured in a New Year fight at a prison in Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, local media report.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The fight started on New Year’s Eve when the inmates drank liquor to celebrate the holiday and a fight erupted, Prensa Libre said on Friday, citing anonymous sources.

The prisoners cut off electricity at the facility and burnt mattresses and sheets during the brawl. At least two of the inmates were decapitated in the fight, according to unofficial reports cited by Prensa Libre.

Police had difficulty entering the prison because inmates were threatening more violence. The situation was finally brought under control on Friday.

According to Prensa Libre, there are at least 944 inmates in the Puerto Barrios prison, although it was only built for 175 people.

The facility is located about 300 kilometers (186 miles) northeast of the capital, Guatemala City, and has seen violent incidents before.
