MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — The gamma rays directed at the truck, which was in motion, helped find the migrants, who were close to death due to lack of oxygen, the commission said.
The vehicle, from which the military could hear pleas for help, was stopped, and the soldiers pulled 64 people, including 22 children, out of the truck,
Most of the migrants, who did not have any documents for legal stay in Mexico, were from Guatemala, the rest of them were from El Salvador, Honduras, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic, the commission said.
Mexico's north borders the United States. The number of immigrants from Mexico to the United States has been high since the early 1990s, amounting to almost a half of the total US undocumented immigration share, according to Pew Research Center.
According to the Migration Policy Institute, the current number of US immigrants and their US-born children is approximately 80 million people, which is one-quarter of the overall population of the country.
