MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — Around 20 people were injured Wednesday in clashes between inmates of Guatemala’s notorious Pavon prison outside of the nation’s capital, prison system spokesman Rudy Esquivel said.
Scuffles began at 7:30 a.m., the local Prensa Libre news portal cited Esquivel as saying. Ten inmates were taken to the prison hospital. An investigation was launched into the cause of violence.
There are 2,183 inmates currently serving jail terms at the Pavon prison.
The facility is known for having been ruled for decades by prisoners themselves after it became so overcrowded that guards only controlled its wire-fence perimeter. Guatemalan police and military reestablished control in 2006.
