MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — At least 20 people died and over 30 were wounded in the Mexican state of Zacatecas, where a heavy truck crashed into a crowd of pilgrims in Mazapil municipality, local media reported Thursday, citing the secretary general of the administration.
Jaime Santoyo Castro said the exact number of the dead and wounded was unknown so far, as many of the injured were taken to various hospitals by their own families, Zocalo newspaper reported.
Santoyo Castro said the causes of the accident were yet to be determined, adding that it was not confirmed if the driver had fled the scene or was among the dead or injured.
According to Santoyo Castro, the director of civil protection of the state, the secretary of public security and the head of the health services of Zacatecas were sent to provide support to the injured and their families.
Santoyo Castro noted that the state governor was expected to visit the affected families on Thursday.
