MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The quake’s epicenter was situated about 90 kilometers (55 miles) northwest of the Chilean city of Concepcion and 430 kilometers (267 miles) southwest of the capital of Santiago.

No tsunami warnings have been issued and there are so far no reports of damage from the earthquake.

Earthquakes of 6.0-magnitude and above are considered strong and may cause the destruction of infrastructure as well as human casualties.

Quakes are a common occurrence in Chile. On April 1, 2014, a powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake hit off Chile's Pacific coast, claiming lives of at least five people and forcing a massive evacuation.
