Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, currently serving a 25-year sentence for corruption and other crimes, may be released in December, according to attorney.

MEXICO CITY, November 4 (RIA Novosti) — Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who is serving a 25-year sentence for corruption and other crimes, may be released from Jail in December, Gloria Cano, a lawyer with the Association for Human Rights in Peru, said.

In an interview with the Peruvian TV channel Canal N Monday, Cano noted that in the near future Fujimori's sentence for killing 25 civilians could be reversed. She also added that the court had previously reduced the terms of imprisonment for the military convicted along with Fujimori.

Fujimori is suffering from cancer and other medical problems. He has been repeatedly hospitalized while in prison due to his poor health. Nevertheless, according to Cano, his health is not the reason for Fujimori's possible release.

Cano, representing the interests of the victims' relatives, is confident that the case will not be objective. According to the lawyer, the President of the Peruvian Supreme Court of Justice Javier Villa Stein does not consider Fujimori's case as a crime against humanity.

Fujimori served as president of Peru from 1990 to 2000. During this time he managed to almost completely destroy the Maoist insurgent group Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) that has kept the country in a perpetual state of fear for many years.

However, during his time as president, Fujimori, according to the findings of the court, was involved in corruption schemes and has misappropriated at least $200 million. In 2009, the ex-president was convicted of human rights violations and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
