On August 13,1961, East German Leaders decided to close the border with West Berlin...

The East Germany's Interior Ministry allotted seven street checkpoints and one railway checkpoint for the residents of West Berlin, West Germany and foreign citizens. East Berlin and East Germany (GDR) residents were forbidden to cross the border. Surrounded by East Germany on all sides, West Berlin became a coveted and hard-to-reach island of freedom. This situation persisted until November 9,1989 when the border was reopened after large protests.
