The region is situated on the earthquake-prone convergence of the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates. In 2004, the boundaries between the two plates slipped, causing a 9.1- 9.3 magnitude Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale has shaken the Myanmar-Indian border region, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said. The epicentre of the seismic activity was registered 35 kilometres southeast of Myanmar and 168 kilometres southeast of Aizawl in India, according to the EMSC.

According to the agency, the tremor struck at 10 kilometres below the earth's surface.

There are no immediate details whether the earthquake damaged any buildings or caused any casualties in the area.
