Tremors and earthquakes are common events in the country, which sits on a seismically active area within the complex zone of collision between the Eurasian Plate and both the African and Arabian Plates. According to local media in 2020, there were more than 33,000 earthquakes, including 322 4.0 and higher on the Richter scale.
A strong 5.0-magnitude earthquake has struck Turkey, with the epicentre in the district of Altıntaş, Kutahya Province, the country's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced on social media. There have been no reports of casualties or damage in the area.
Social media users write that the tremor was felt in other cities, including the capital Ankara. Footage purportedly from the scene posted on social media shows that the natural event didn't hamper people's everyday lives much, portraying individuals walking on the street as if nothing had happened.
As mentioned earlier, Turkey sits on a seismically active area and earthquakes are not out of the ordinary in the country. Quite often, these events result in large-scale damage and fatalities. Last year, over 100 people died and more than a 1,000 were injured after a 7.0-magnitude tremor struck the city of Izmir.
One of the worst earthquakes in Turkey's modern history occurred in 1939 in the province of Erzincan. Back then, more than 32,000 people died and over 100,000 were injured.
