Belgian Labour Regulator Rules to Reclassify Uber Driver as Employee, Reports Say

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) - A Belgian driver working for US ride-hailing firm Uber has been reclassified as its employee after arguing that the terms of service were too stifling for an independent contractor, media said.

In a written response, seen by Le Soir daily, Belgium’s administrative commission for working relationships agreed that the driver had to follow a fully standardised procedure to get paid.

The driver told the paper he had nothing to lose and would go all the way to secure employee benefits and protections from the multinational business.

The regulator’s decision is non-binding but a labour ministry official told the paper they planned to settle the dispute over a "pseudo self-employed" staff of app-based companies. Uber has been notified about the ruling.
