According to Berliner Zeitung, the incident occurred on Saturday morning. At least three people have been taken to hospitals with serious injuries, the emergency services stated. One more man was pulled from the nearby Landwehr Canal after having jumped into it of his own volition, police said.

Police are searching for attackers who began firing in the Kreuzberg district of the German capital, according to preliminary reports. Law enforcement officers have arrived at the scene in the district. A helicopter is also involved in the operation.

The Berlin Fire Department wrote on Twitter that three people had been taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The newspaper Die Welt has since stated the incident occurred near the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.

However, a police spokesperson said the shooting had "nothing to do with the SPD headquarters"

The shooting is believed to have followed a quarrel.

"According to preliminary data, a quarrel occurred on Stresemannstraße between an unknown number of participants. As a result, four people, all males, sustained gunshot wounds and were hospitalized. The investigation is underway, the case has been referred to the homicide investigation department," the official added.

The spokesperson noted that police had yet to determine if one or several shooters had been involved. No detentions have been made in connection with the incident so far.
