Germany has so far registered over 539,000 coronavirus cases, while the death toll in the country has surpassed 10,500. According to Chancellor Angela Merkel, the number of people in intensive care units has doubled over the past 10 days, and Germany is now "in a very serious situation".

Sputnik is live from Munich, Bavaria, where Germans are protesting against the month-long coronavirus lockdown being introduced in the country amid the rising numbers of infections.

The lockdown imposed by Angela Merkel's government stipulates the closure of theatres, bars, and restaurants, as well as a ban on mass events, travel restrictions, and many other measures aimed at curbing the pandemic.
