Live Updates: Tens of Thousands of People Protest in Belarusian Capital

Earlier in the day, Olga Chemodanova, spokeswoman for the Belarusian Interior Ministry, stated that roughly 250 people had been detained by security forces in Minsk amid large-scale opposition protests.

Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets of the Belarusian capital on Sunday heading towards the Palace of Independence to demonstrate against the results of the August presidential election.

Traffic officers are currently working to redirect vehicles, given that the protesters have blocked several major thoroughfares and intersections in the city.

A large-scale opposition protest movement has been ongoing in Belarus for more than a month following the 9 August presidential election, which saw incumbent Alexander Lukashenko win a sixth term in office. The Belarusian opposition has rejected the results of the vote.

As thousands of demonstrators have been detained across the country, the opposition has accused the security forces of excessive violence, while the government blames the protests on foreign interference.

RT correspondent Konstantin Pridybailo has said on Sunday that some internet users in Belarus have threatened the broadcaster’s employees.

In a post on his Telegram channel, Pridybailo uploaded screenshots that showed RT employees receiving threats and insults.

"There should be text here, but I will not write it. My apologies", Pridybailo wrote in his post.

More than 400 people have been detained in the Belarusian capital of Minsk on Sunday during the latest day of unsanctioned opposition protests, the Belarusian Interior Ministry said in a press release.

The ministry also confirmed that warning shots were fired during clashes between protesters and the security forces, although the authorities confirmed that no stun grenades were used against demonstrators.

The Interior Ministry also commented on the internet-distributed reports about a "sound resembling a firearm shot" in Minsk at around 6 p.m.

"We clarified it. Police officers detained several active protesters in the Victors Avenue. During it, other protesters — at least a hundred people — tried to fight them back. To prevent unlawful actions, a warning shot was fired in the air from a pump-action rifle", the press release read.

The ministry specified that no stun grenades were used, as reported by the Polish-based Belarusian-language Euroradio broadcaster.

"As of 7 p.m. [16:00 GMT], protests across the country ended practically everywhere, except for Minsk. In different parts of the capital city, more than 400 people were detained", the Interior Ministry said on its Telegram channel.

The Belarus Ministry of Internal Affairs has no information to confirm reports spread online that shots were fired on Novovilenskaya Street in Minsk as opposition protesters sought to pass through a barricade put up by security forces, spokeswoman Olga Chemodanova said on Sunday.

“The operational command centre does not have information that shots were fired in the area of Novovilenskaya Street. There is no such information,” Chemodanova said.

Natalya Ganusevich, a spokeswoman for the police department of the Minsk City Executive Committee, also denied the reports.

“We have no such information. Firearms have not been used,” Ganusevich said.

The Belarusian cellular operator A1 has said on Sunday that it has reduced the bandwidth of mobile internet services in Minsk after a request was made by the authorities.

“In accordance with an order issued by the authorities on September 13, mobile internet bandwidth in Minsk has been reduced. The fulfilment of this requirement will result in a deterioration in data transfer speeds or the temporary unavailability of services,” A1 said in a Twitter post.

The cellular operator said that it will provide a further update once services are restored in full.
