Protests began in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, and other cities on 10 August following the preliminary results of the national presidential election, which showed that current President Alexander Lukashenko secured his sixth consecutive presidential term, winning over 80 percent of the vote.

On 17 August, demonstrators gather near the Isolation Centre for Offenders in Minsk to demand the release of detainees and political prisoners.

According to officials, over 6,700 people have been apprehended since the beginning of the protests. The Ministry of Internal Affairs said hundreds of people were injured, including more than 120 police officers. Two demonstrators died, the Health Ministry added.
