    Germany's six-month presidency in the Council of the European Union began on July 1 and is expected to focus mainly on the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, climate change and Europe'​s role in the world. 

    German Chancellor Angela Merkel is arriving at the European Parliament in Brussels prior to a plenary session with lawmakers to discuss the strategy and main goals of the German Presidency.

    Merkel is set to be received by European Parliament President David Sassoli and will sign the golden book marking her first foreign trip since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
