An explosion occurred in a housing block at 8:55 am on Friday, local police say.

At least one person has died, another one is missing and 25 more have been injured following an explosion in the eastern German city of Blankenburg, the MDR broadcaster says, citing sources in local police.

According to a police account on Twitter, the explosion took place on Bertolt-Brecht Street. The evacuation is underway from a block of flats. The cause of the explosion is still unknown.

The police also shared a photo of the damaged apartment building.

They added that a kindergarten that is located nearby has been evacuated, too. All the children are reportedly safe.
