France's main police unions warned on Monday of the need to take tougher action against what they condemned as the government's failure to provide guarantees for the police pension scheme.

Police officers are gathering in Paris to demonstrate against the government's proposed pension reform. The protesters gathered in front of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council building just ahead of a speech by Prime Minister Edouard Philippe who is expected to set out his blueprint for reform.

Three major police unions are taking part in the public action - Alliance Police Nationale, UNSA-Police Unit and SGP Police - FO.

The government is planning to introduce a universal pension system that, according to French trade unions, will lead to negative changes for private-sector workers, who will have to work beyond the legal retirement age in order to receive a full pension.
