Live Updates: Brexit Bill Chaos Continues as Johnson, Corbyn Fail to Break the Deadlock

On Tuesday night, the UK parliament approved the Brexit bill in principle but voted to have more time to scrutinise the divorce deal, prompting Prime Minister Boris Johnson to pause the legislation. European Council President Donald Tusk said that he would ask EU leaders to give the country another Brexit extension.

On Wednesday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn in a bid to break the deadlock on the UK's plan to leave the European Union by 31 October. Johnson's spokesperson, however, later announced that the two politicians had failed to find common ground during the encounter.

The House of Commons, on Tuesday, passed Johnson's withdrawal bill by a 329-299 vote, allowing it to move to the next phase of debates, but then rejected the three-day deadline for debating the bill by a 322-308 vote. Johnson was therefore forced to pause the debate.

The prime minister asked the EU last week to postpone Brexit until 31 January 2020, as he was mandated to under the Benn Act. However, he accompanied the letter with a personal note in which he argued against granting the UK that extension.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has launched a tirade against Prime Minister Boris Johnson accusing the latter of spreading "lies" during the Brexit referendum campaign.

"David Cameron asked me not to intervene in the referendum campaign because he said the European Commission is even less popular on the islands than on the continent ... That was a major mistake: I should have intervened, because nobody was denying, contesting the lies Boris Johnson and others were spreading around," Juncker said at a think-tank in Brussels.

According to the UK Prime Minister, a Brexit delay could go on for a long time, adding that Parliament can study the Brexit deal before dissolution.

Nevertheless, Johnson added that it is still possible that the EU will offer the UK a shorter Brexit delay.

"This ends with us leaving with the PM's deal," the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said. "We will leave with a deal, with the PM's deal."

When asked if Brexit would happen by the 31 October deadline, the source said: "Parliament has taken back control," as quoted by Reuters.
