Live Updates: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson Plans to Suspend Parliament Before Brexit

The British Parliament was supposed to return from its summer break next week and prepare for fresh debates on Brexit, while Prime Minister Boris Johnson has previously pledged to withdraw from the EU with or without a withdrawal agreement.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated that he has asked for the Queen's permission to suspend Parliament until 14 October.

"This morning I spoke to Her Majesty The Queen to request an end to the current parliamentary session in the second sitting week in September, before commencing the second session of this Parliament with a Queen's speech on Monday 14 October", Johnson said in a letter to lawmakers.

The United Kingdom is expected to leave the European Union by 31 October, but the process has remained stalled since the country’s Parliament rejected the deal negotiated with the EU by Johnson's predecessor, Theresa May. Despite this, lawmakers have also spoken out against leaving the European Union without a deal.

"A number of my colleagues would have preferred to wait ... and move in late September. That will now not be possible. We will have to try to do something when parliament returns next week", he stated.

"Once Parliament returns, opponents will try to seize the legislative initiative and force the government to rule out No Deal and extend the leaving date from the EU. This will probably fail and Remainers will then try to pass a vote of no confidence in the government and bring it down. These people will try everything to overthrow the democratic majority vote in the 2016 referendum. Despite their claims of defending democracy, they are attempting to use Parliament to defeat the will of the people", Alan Sked, emeritus professor with the Department of International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science, stated in an interview.

"It is this day ordered by Her Majesty in Council that the Parliament be prorogued on a day no earlier than Monday the 9th day of September and no later than Thursday the 12th day of September 2019 to Monday the 14th day of October 2019" the official body of advisers to the Queen, known as the Privy Council said in a statement.

"The Withdrawal Agreement, including the now famous backstop, cannot simply be renegotiated. Even if we wanted to do that, which we don't, we can't do it in six or ten weeks", Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney stated.

The pound plunged to its lowest mark in nearly a week on 28 August.

"For the pound to recover the fall this morning, anti-no-deal MPs will have to get their acts together in the first weeks of September", strategist at Nomura Jordan Rochester stated, boosting the odds of a no-deal Brexit to 44% in comparison to 40% earlier.

The EU "is not commenting on the internal political procedures of our member states. And we're also not going to speculate what this means in terms of next steps", EU Commission spokesperson Mina Andreeva stated.

"I am appalled at the recklessness of Johnson's government, which talks about sovereignty and yet is seeking to suspend parliament to avoid scrutiny of its plans for a reckless No Deal Brexit. This is an outrage and a threat to our democracy", Jeremy Corbyn said in a statement.
