Previously, France's Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer announced that the jobs of at least 2,650 people employed in the sector would be scrapped in order to reduce the number of public service workers, and that the salaries of those who remained would increase.

A rally is being held to protest against the educational reforms proposed by Blanquer and supported by French President Emmanuel Macron. The teachers and students participating in the demonstration gathered there at the behest of major French teaching unions, which consider the government policy to be an attack on public education.
