Anti-Islamic activist Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon known as Tommy Robinson established the EDL in a bid to tackle what it then described as Islamic extremism and the presence of Sharia law courts in the United Kingdom.

The "Veterans against Terrorism" rallies supported by former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson take to the streets of London on October 20, under the banner "I am Soldier X."

The UK Army has started an investigation, warning it would not tolerate "extremist views" and has discharged an unnamed soldier who featured in a video with ex-English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson surrounded by recruits cheering him.
