    Protesters are demanding that the government change its policies and laws, including that it strengthen border controls, conduct a referendum on Germany’s membership of the EU and introduce direct elections for the country's presidency and chancellorship.

    A nationalist protest against the government is taking place in Berlin on October 3.

    On this day, Germany celebrates the anniversary of the 1990 reunification of East and West Germany, when the goal of German unity, "Deutsche Einheit," which began in the 19th century, was again accomplished.
