Hundreds of thousands of Greeks took to the streets in the capital of the Greek province of Macedonia to protest against the use of the name Macedonia by FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).

Greece and Macedonia are involved in an ongoing dispute over the name of the Republic of Macedonia.

Greece views "Macedonia" as a term, referring only to one of its regions and to the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia, insisting on the use of the term the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) for it northern neighbor's name. Because of the issue, Athens has been blocking Skopje's accession to NATO and to the European Union for years.
