MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Gavin Williamson on Thursday became the UK defense secretary following the resignation of Michael Fallon, Number 10 Downing Street said.
Fallon resigned on Wednesday, saying that his conduct had "fallen below the high standards" of the armed forces in the past.
"The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Rt. Hon. Gavin Williamson as Secretary of State for Defense," the statement read, as quoted by The Guardian newspaper.
"Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury (Chief Whip) – Julian Smith MP (having previously been Treasurer of HM Household (Deputy Chief Whip))," the statement reads.
