A plot to kidnap and assassinate left-wing politicians is being investigated in Germany over the country's immigration policy.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The German Prosecutor's Office is conducting an investigation into two individuals over their alleged preparation of assassinations of left-wing politicians, federal prosecutors said on Monday.

On August 24-25, police conducted searches in the suspects' residences and work. Similar searches took place with relation to another person not among the alleged perpetrators in the northern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state. Stocks of food and weapons were found in their apartments.

The investigation revealed that the suspects had discussed the German government's immigration policy, which, in their opinion, had failed and could lead to disastrous consequences for the country, even as far as the fall of the state system.

"The suspects saw this crisis situation that stirred their concern as an opportunity for kidnapping and killing left-wing politicians," the prosecutors said, adding that the suspects had also made a list of possible victims.

Germany Doubles Border Rejections Amid Ongoing Migrant Crisis
In recent years, European countries have faced the worst migration crisis since World War II, as hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa for more stable and wealthy EU member states, such as Germany and France.

Germany announced that all Syrian asylum seekers were welcome to remain in Germany, suspending a 1990 protocol, which states that refugees should seek asylum in the first European country in which they set foot.

This humanitarian effort was summed up by German Chancellor Angela Merkel's phrase "Wir schaffen das" or "We can manage it."

However, earlier in July, Merkel said that Germany has the capacity to limit migration flows to avoid a repeat of the 2015 refugee crisis.
