The Australian government confirmed on Monday that its seven-year-old national was among the people killed in the recent deadly attack in the Spanish city of Barcelona.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Shortly after the deadly Thursday attack in Barcelona, media reported that an Australian child, identified as Julian Cadman, was killed in the ramming incident.

"The Australian Government is deeply saddened to confirm that Julian Cadman, a seven year old Australian boy, was among those killed in the terrorist attack in Barcelona."

According to the statement, the government calls on the media to respect the privacy of Cadman's family "at this difficult and harrowing time."

Julian’s family characterized the child as an "energetic, funny and cheeky" boy, adding that he "was much loved and adored member of our family. As he was enjoying the sights of Barcelona with his mother, Julian was sadly taken from us."

On August 17, a van hit pedestrians in the center of Barcelona, killing 13 and injuring over 130 others. Daesh terrorist group claimed responsibility for attack. According to Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, four Australians were injured in the attack along people of some 30 other nationalities.
