UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Thursday’s terrorist attack in Barcelona and expressed solidarity with the people of Spain and sincere sympathy to the families of the victims, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said in a statement.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The United Nations stated it stands in solidarity with the government of Spain in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

"The Secretary-General condemns today's terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain. He extends his heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those killed and to the Government and people of Spain," the statement said on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, a van hit pedestrians in Las Ramblas street in central Barelona. The authorities confirmed that 13 people were killed and more than 50 injured in the incident, which they qualified as a terrorist act.

Daesh terror group (outlawed in Russia) claimed responsibility for the attack.
