Government financing must be given up before the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Baltic countries starts, Estonia’s Prime Minister Juri Ratas said Friday.

TALLINN (Sputnik) – The prime minister added that Estonia did not want to use taxpayer money for this project.

"We are ready to discuss various formats of cooperation but equal market rules and a halt to government support must be the prerequisites for forming an effectively operating gas market infrastructure," Ratas was quoted as saying in a statement by the government's press service.

The statement was issued by the Estonian government in relation to Ratas' visit to the Incukalns gas storage facility in Latvia during which the prime minister met with counterparts from Latvia and Lithuania to discuss building an LNG terminal. The visit was carried out as part of an agreement of Baltic prime ministers to hold joint visits to gas infrastructure in the countries.

In 2014, Finland and Estonia reached an agreement to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, connected by a pipeline across the Gulf of Finland by 2019. The project aims to diversify and secure gas deliveries to the Baltic states.
