Over 100,000 migrants reached Europe from North Africa and the Middle East in the first half of 2017, according to data published by the International Organization of Migration.
The overwhelming majority of the migrants try to get to Europe by sea, taking journeys that sometimes end in the deaths of those onboard.
In 2016, more than 5,000 people drowned in the Mediterranean in an attempt to reach Europe, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This year, at least 2,000 people have drowned attempting the journey by dinghy.
