EU Commission Officials Spent Nearly $30,000 on Private Flight

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker spent 25,000 euros (almost $30,000) on a private flight from Brussels to Rome for a delegation of officials last year, documents disclosed by the EU body have revealed.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The spending figures for January and February 2016 were obtained by a transparency group, Access Info, after years of battling with the EU authority, the UK broadcaster BBC reported Wednesday.

A nine-person delegation chartered a private plane to carry them to Italy after failing to find a "viable" commercial flight, Commission spokeswoman Mina Andreeva was quoted as saying by the outlet.

Andreeva reportedly said the use of "air taxi" did not violate EU rules. The Commission spent nearly 500,000 euros on transport and accommodation for its officials over the said two months.
