Turkish security forces warned G20 host Germany about a possible plan to assassinate President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the summit, media reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — An official note was sent to the German criminal police BKA on the eve of the July 7-8 summit in Hamburg, according to information obtained by the Welt newspaper.

A former Turkish law enforcer was reportedly linked to a plot by several people dressed in German police uniforms to attack the president. A BKA spokesperson confirmed they had been notified but said the threat was assessed as unlikely.

Turkey has previously accused Germany of harboring officers it suspects of being behind the July 2016 failed coup attempt that led to a unprecedented purge.
